Booking the Visa Medical for a Partner Visa
You book the partner visa medical with Bupa Medical Visa Services in Australia, or a panel physician overseas, using the HAP ID the Department gives you, and you pay the provider directly.
You can have the medical after you lodge, when the Department asks, or before you lodge through the My Health Declarations service if your visa is listed there. This page follows the Department of Home Affairs' health pages as they stood on 23 September 2026.
- Get your HAP ID. It comes in the referral letter in ImmiAccount, or from My Health Declarations.
- Book the appointment, with Bupa Medical Visa Services in Australia or a panel physician outside Australia.
- Bring what the clinic needs: your original passport and the letter that shows your HAP ID.
- Attend, for the examinations your letter lists.
- Results go to the Department electronically through eMedical.
- Check ImmiAccount and respond if the Department asks for anything more.
How do you get a HAP ID for a partner visa?
A HAP ID is the identifier the Department gives you with your list of required examinations. You need it to book, and the clinic cannot find your case without it.
After lodging: the Department's request in ImmiAccount
If you lodged online, your HAP ID is in the referral letter you download from ImmiAccount when you apply. If you lodged on paper, or cannot generate the referral letter, it is in your Health Examination List letter. Where to find the letter is covered under ImmiAccount for a partner visa.
Before lodging: My Health Declarations
The Department's My Health Declarations service lets you complete your examinations before you apply, if your visa is listed in the service and you have not yet lodged. You can include family members who are migrating with you. The Department warns that if processing is delayed you may have to repeat the examinations, and suggests checking processing times before you decide.
How do you book the partner visa medical?
In Australia
Book with Bupa Medical Visa Services, which the Department names as its migration medical services provider. You book online. The Department says to call Bupa on 1300 794 919 if you have no internet access.
Outside Australia
You must be examined by one of the Department's approved panel physicians or clinics. A panel physician is a doctor or radiologist the Department appoints to do examinations at an approved clinic. Find one near you on the Department's list of offices and panel physicians outside Australia.
How much does the partner visa medical cost?
You pay the provider directly, and the fee is not part of the partner visa application charge. The Department says you are responsible for the examining doctor or radiologist, any special tests or treatment, any specialists you need to see, and courier fees. In Australia it points applicants to Bupa Medical Visa Services' own fee list. Outside Australia it says costs vary from country to country and are similar to a comprehensive local examination, so ask the clinic before your appointment. This guide gives no dollar figure because none is published on a government page, and the fee is set by the provider.
Does Bupa health insurance cover the visa medical?
Bupa Medical Visa Services is the Department's contracted examination provider, which is separate from any health insurance policy. The Department makes the applicant responsible for the cost; whether a policy reimburses any of it is a question for the insurer.
What happens at the partner visa medical appointment?
Bring:
- a valid passport in its original form (digital copies and photocopies are not accepted)
- your HAP ID, with your Health Examination List letter or the referral letter from the Department
- your glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them
- any specialist or other medical reports for conditions you already know about
- any previous chest x-rays.
If you do not have a valid passport, in Australia the Department accepts some alternatives, including a passport that expired within the last 2 years, an ImmiCard, or an Australian driver licence or photo identification card. Outside Australia the list is different. For anything else, contact your case officer before you book. The examinations themselves depend on your age. If you cannot attend within the time set in your Request for Health Examination letter, tell the Department by attaching the details in ImmiAccount.
How do you know the partner visa health check is finished?
Clinics that use eMedical, the Department's electronic health processing system, send your results to the Department straight away. Anyone with a HAP ID can use eMedical to see if and when their results were submitted. After that, check your application in ImmiAccount. If your results show a medical condition, a Medical Officer of the Commonwealth assesses them and the Department may ask for further tests. Can you reuse a medical from an earlier visa?
The Department decides whether it needs new examinations. If it does, it gives you a HAP ID and a list of the examinations. How long results stay valid is on the core health page.
Do children attend the partner visa medical?
Yes. Every child included in the application is examined, with tests that depend on age.
Can you reschedule the partner visa medical?
Yes. Change or cancel through Bupa's online booking system or by calling 1300 794 919, with the HAP ID you booked under. Outside Australia, contact the clinic.

Booking the medical at the wrong time can mean paying for it twice. A registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner plans the medical, the police certificates and the lodgement date together, so an application they prepare is more likely to succeed. Nobody can promise a grant.
